Within the current campus of Nanjing University, there are several former residences of famous individuals. In addition to the He Yingqin Mansion in the North Garden, Sun Yat-sen’s residence and Rabe’s former home in the South Garden, there is also Pearl S. Buck’s former residence located at the base of the west wall in the North Garden. It now serves as the office building for Nanjing University Science and Technology Industry Group Company and the Industrial Office of Nanjing University.
Pearl S. Buck, an author who loved Chinese culture, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She and her husband subsequently taught at Jinling University (the predecessor of Nanjing University) and lived in this quiet little house. It was during this beautiful period of over a decade that Pearl S. Buck wrote ‘The Exile’ and the Nobel Prize-winning ‘The Good Earth’, among other excellent works.
