The scenic area is centered around the ancient residential complex of Yangliu Village, known as ‘Ninety-Nine and a Half Rooms’. These ancient architectural groups were initially constructed in the seventh year of the Ming Dynasty, completed during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty, and represent one of the larger and more intact Ming and Qing dynasty residential complexes preserved in Nanjing to date.
The Yangliu Lake Cultural Scenic Area consists of three parts: the core display area of ancient residences, the Yangliu Lake water tour area, and the mountain and forest section. In March 2013, the Jiangning District High-Tech Park, the Transportation Construction Group, the Jiangning District Culture and Broadcasting Bureau, and the Hushu Street Office began to jointly develop this scenic area, relying on the provincial cultural protection unit—the Yangliu Village residential complex—to create a comprehensive cultural scenic area integrating culture, tourism, and leisure vacation. Currently, the scenic area has constructed a 2000-meter long and 8-meter wide Longmian Avenue leading to Yangliu Village and a 3000-meter walking path, as well as the construction and creation of a number of scenic spots. A significant highlight of the scenic area is the development of a 5.6-kilometer ‘water tour route’. Yangliu Lake, an ancient grain transport canal, winds around the village with sparkling waves, and recently, engineering teams have been working intensively on dredging the canal and restoring ancient docks. Visitors will soon be able to enjoy the scenery by taking a painted barge, and the ‘water tour route’ will connect all the scenic spots within the area, including the ancient stage, the entrance to ‘Ninety-Nine and a Half Rooms’, and the educated youth settlement points.
