Nanmen Street in Gaoyou is an essential part of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which is the 46th World Heritage site in China, listed as a World Heritage in June 2014. It was once a bustling historical and cultural district of Gaoyou city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Constructed in the Song Dynasty, it flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties and prospered in modern times, truly serving as a crucial link between the Lixiahe region and the Grand Canal, bridging the areas of Jiangsu and Anhui.
Visitors from both sides of the canal and cargo from the north and south of the Yangtze River have sustained this momentum for nearly 600 years. However, it suffered a severe blow in the 1940s due to war and a massive fire, gradually falling into decline. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Gaoyou Municipal People’s Government restored the Yucheng Post Station from 1993 to 1995, and the 230-meter-long Nanmen Street was restored to its former glory, regaining its vitality. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.Must Read
