Tan Garden, a private garden of the Ming Dynasty’s renowned literary figure and one of the ‘Four Gentlemen of Jiading’, Li Liufang, is exquisitely designed. The garden’s layout is compact and well-proportioned, centered around a gourd-shaped pond with halls encircling it. The caves and ravines meander gracefully, with winding corridors connecting the entire garden, reflecting the characteristics of Jiangnan private gardens.
It achieves the garden effect of ‘corridor follows bridge, step moves, scene changes’, allowing visitors to stroll within as if in a painting. The design of Tan Garden employs methods of layering and permeation, creating a visual effect of winding paths and subtle appearances. Centered around the water features, it uses a pattern of ‘one center, multiple extensions’, separated from the bustling city by high walls. The landscape of mountains, buildings, and plants is distributed naturally within the limited space, fully embodying the artistic principle of ‘greatness within smallness’, creating a garden layout of ‘a foot within the mountains and forests, with many beautiful scenes’. Tan Garden is located in the heart of Nanxiang Town, surrounded by famous attractions such as the historic Nanxiang Old Street, Yunxiang Temple, Guyi Garden, Nanxiang Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall, Old Street Book Field, and Old Street Tourist Boats.
