Nanxun Ancient Town boasts a rich history, with rivers flowing through the town. Historically, the town was home to many wealthy residents, and the architecture reflects this with elegant estates. Due to the influence of Western styles, Nanxun is also a blend of Chinese and Western architecture, exuding nobility and grace. The town is not large, and a quick tour can be completed in half a day. Visitors can also opt for boat tours, which typically accommodate up to 8 people. The town has developed nine major attractions, mostly the private residences and gardens of the wealthy residents from the past. Given Nanxun’s characteristic of having many deep mansions from the rich, and the serene beauty of the architecture, these nine attractions are the main highlights of Nanxun.
Starting the tour from Xiaolianzhuang Garden, visitors can admire the lotus pond and the various exotic plants and trees combined with the garden’s elegance, making it an ideal spot for sightseeing and photography. Adjacent to Xiaolianzhuang is Jiayetang Library, which serves as both a tourist attraction and a library, offering a tranquil and pleasing environment. After visiting these two attractions, one arrives at the small river, with the banks being Nandong Street and Nanxi Street, connected by several small bridges.

Walking north along the river, one can find several major attractions within the scenic area, including Zhang Shiming’s Former Residence, Qiushi Li, Liu’s Ladder Number, Guanghui Palace, and the Silk Industry Guild, showcasing both old estates and the history of the local silk industry, each with its unique features.

Baijianlou and Zhang Jingjiang’s Former Residence are located across the river at the end of Nandong Street. At Baijianlou, one can observe the simple life of the locals in the ancient town every morning and evening, making it a great place for photography. There is also an exciting cormorant fishing performance on the small river in the middle of the street, which is quite entertaining. For dining and accommodation, there are several workshops on the street where visitors can purchase local specialties such as pastries and snacks. After passing the Silk Industry Guild on Nandong Street, one can find Bianmin Road on the right, which has many snack shops, especially noodle shops, offering a taste of the Jiangnan specialty, Shuangjia noodles.

If you plan to stay overnight in Nanxun, you can choose a characteristic inn near Baijianlou. The inns on Dongda Street, south of Baijianlou, are built along the river, exuding a simple and elegant charm. However, the accommodation prices in the ancient town are slightly higher. For more affordable options, one can walk about ten minutes to Tai’an Road or Tongxin Road nearby, where there are several hotels with more reasonable rates.
