Ni’s Residence is the ancestral home of Ni Tianzeng, former vice mayor of Shanghai. It is located in the south of Shaoxianggang. Built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the overall architecture is simple and implicit, without a trace of flamboyance. It is a typical representative of Confucianism. In Xitang, there are five major surnames: Ni, Jiang, Zhu, Bu, and Lu. Among them, the Ni surname ranks first. The Ni family is a scholarly family in the town. Ni Tianzeng’s grandfather was a scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. Ni Tianzeng was born in 1937. He served as vice mayor of Shanghai for four consecutive terms and was deeply loved by the people. Due to years of overwork, he unfortunately passed away due to ineffective rescue from a myocardial infarction at the age of 54. He is praised as ‘a public servant of the citizens’ and ‘a model of diligence. His sweat is shed in Pudong and his achievements will last for thousands of years’. Ni’s Residence is in a typical style of residences in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Originally, it had five courtyards. There was a corridor in the front and a garden in the back. Now only two courtyards have been repaired. The latter three courtyards are still inhabited by local residents and are not open to the public. The first courtyard is the foyer where the statue of Ni Tianzeng is located. The second courtyard is the patio and the main hall. The main hall is named ‘Chengqing Hall’. On both sides of the main hall are the music room and the chess room. Upstairs, there is an exhibition of Ni Tianzeng’s relics, as well as his life’s photo materials and inscriptions by relevant central leaders. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:30. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
