Notre-Dame de Paris, the French original musical, celebrates its 25th anniversary with the enduring beauty of its return to the era of the great cathedral. A timeless classic, this musical is based on the world-renowned novel by French literary giant Victor Hugo, with lyrics by Luc Plamondon and music by Richard Cocciante. Its powerful and震撼ing modern music, coupled with visually stunning stage settings and deeply committed performances, vividly express the novel’s themes of the vastness of time and fate, the denunciation and criticism of the church and feudal system, the clergy’s evil deeds, the nobility’s despicable moral ethics, and the praise of humanitarian and benevolent spirit. The musical first shone brightly at the French Cannes Music Fair in January 1998 and officially premiered at the Paris Congress Hall on September 16th of the same year, receiving rave reviews. Within two years of its premiere, its charm swept across Europe, with 130 performances in French-speaking countries, winning multiple Canadian FELIX art awards including ‘Play of the Year’, ‘Best Song of the Year’, and ‘Best-Selling Album of the Year’.

Characters and scenes in Notre-Dame de Paris are filled with opposition and conflict: admiration and obsession, vows and betrayal, power and possession, destiny and struggle, original sin and redemption, degradation and sublimation. The dramatic tension, with its ups and downs, constructs a grand and tragic epic, interwoven with blood and tears, transcending the trends of the times and cultural barriers, ushering in a new era of contemporary musicals. Since its inception, Notre-Dame de Paris has had multiple international versions and touring productions, including some international concert versions. In 2016, the show was restaged in its original French version and began a new round of tours. At the end of 2018, the 20th-anniversary edition was performed at the Paris Palais des Congrès, continuing into January 2019. During 2019-2020, the French original musical Notre-Dame de Paris was staged at the Shanghai Cultural Plaza for two rounds, with over 40 performances, all sold out, sparking a theatrical craze in Shanghai. After four years, Notre-Dame de Paris returns to Shanghai to sing the legend of the cathedral era anew…
