In the ancient urban area of Rugao, there are two moats, inner and outer, surrounding it. People call it ‘Ring River’. The urban layout is very unique. The inner moat, also known as Yudai River or City River, was built in the Sui Dynasty. It was originally a tributary dredged from the salt transportation river. At present, except for the northern part which has become flat land, the inner moat still forms a semi-circular shape. It starts from Dongshuiguan, passes through the ancient Yulianchi, goes through the south sluice bridge of Panchen to Yanjiawan, turns northward and ends at Beishuiguan. The total length is 2381 meters. The wider parts are at the ancient Yulianchi and Panchen. The narrower part is from Maojiaqiao to Wendeqiao section. The outer moat, also known as Haohe River, was dug and built in the Ming Dynasty. The river surrounds the city on all sides. The northern section is in the same course as the Tongyang River and the Rutai River. Open all year round and all day long.
