The Overlord Temple, also known as Xiang Wang Temple, Western Chu Overlord Cave, and Xiang Yu Temple. In 202 BC, Xiang Yu was defeated and committed suicide here. Later generations established a temple to worship him. There were originally 99 and a half rooms in the building. It is said that only emperors can build a temple with 100 rooms. Xiang Yu did not achieve imperial dominance and could only build half a room less.
There is a couplet in front of the temple: ‘Sima Qian is an official of the Han Dynasty. In one chapter of the Basic Annals, one cannot believe that historians have no oblique writing. Du Shixiong is truly a heroic man. He cried loudly in the spirit temple. Until now, the vegetation still has some sorrow.’ Meng Jiao, Du Mu, Su Shunqin, Wang Anshi, Lu You and others all have inscribed poems. Inside the Overlord Temple, there is a giant boxwood statue of the overlord. One can see the overlord leaning forward, with wide-open eyes, holding a sword in one hand and taking a step forward with one foot. His majestic demeanor is as it was in the past. Today, in Wujiang, on the first and fifteenth day of each lunar month, in front of the statue of Xiang Yu in the Overlord Temple, incense is always wafting. Villagers from all towns and villages come to participate in a small temple fair. People barter goods or sing and play for entertainment. Amidst the hustle and bustle, Xiang Yu standing there seems to have a bit more joy and a little less majesty.Opening hours: Open all year round and all day. From 8:00 to 17:00.
