Paramount Ballroom, officially known as the Paramount Hotel Ballroom, was originally constructed in 1932 and officially opened on December 14, 1933. For a time, it was a gathering place for the elite and celebrities, with neon lights flashing and jazz echoing, as an endless stream of dancers moved through the venue. The film genius Charlie Chaplin visited twice, accompanied by Mei Lanfang; the patriotic general Zhang Xueliang often lingered there; the legendary couple Chen Xiangmei and Chen Naide chose it as their engagement site; and singers and actresses such as Zhang Lu, Bai Hong, Zhou Xuan, and Gong Qiuxia showcased their talents and competed in beauty here.
In 2013, the restoration of Paramount Ballroom officially commenced, taking three years and costing 120 million yuan. The restoration adhered to the principle of ‘restoring the old as the old’, referring to a large amount of historical and cultural materials, and preserving the charm of Shanghai’s ballrooms from the 1930s. Now, the Paramount Ballroom has regained its former glory, with not only an extremely gorgeous exterior but also a magnificent interior. Huge crystal chandeliers, sprung wooden dance floors, and classic glass dances… all those high-end scenes that can only be seen in old movies can be revisited here. On the second floor, there are private rooms named after the eight great performers, each with a different style, all displaying grandeur. There is also a Charlie Chaplin rotunda, a Young Marshal glass dance floor, and a ‘Flying Tiger General’ Chen Naide and Chen Xiangmei couple rotunda. The third floor features a nostalgic grand ballroom, styled after the night Shanghai of the 1930s, with an international standard dance floor, retro and classic. The reopened Paramount Ballroom has restored some of the signature entertainments of the time, including tea dances, banquet dances, and jazz performances, all of which can be enjoyed here.
