The ‘Pearl Pagoda’ is not a tower but a famous ballad in the Jiangnan area. It mainly tells the love story between Fang Qing and Chen Cuie. The story of ‘Pearl Pagoda’ originated in Tongli. The historical facts of Fang Qing visiting his aunt, Cuie presenting the pagoda, and Chen Wangdao marrying off his daughter have been passed down for a long time in Tongli. The scenic spots related to the ‘Pearl Pagoda’ include the Chen Family Archway and the former residence of Chen Wangdao.
Inside the former residence are the Chen Family Ancestral Temple, Fuji Hall, and Chen Cai’e’s library. The Chen Family Archway is as large as three door openings. The upper part of the archway is made of nanmu structure. There are upturned eaves and corners on the archway. In the middle of the plaque, the four characters ‘Imperial Censor in the Qing Dynasty’ are engraved. On the lower plaque, it is engraved: ‘In the Gengchen year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, it was erected for Chen Wangdao, the censor of Nanjing Road Supervisory Office’. Various vivid birds and beasts are also carved on the wooden frame. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:15. After 17:15, scenic spots in Tongli Ancient Town are not allowed to enter.
