The ‘Pearl Pagoda’ is not a tower, but a famous Jiangnan ballad. It primarily narrates the love story between Fang Qing and Chen Cui’e. The story of the ‘Pearl Pagoda’ originates from Tongli, where the historical facts of Fang Qing visiting his aunt, Cui’e bestowing a tower, and Chen Wangdao’s marriage of his daughter have been passed down through generations.
Sites related to the ‘Pearl Pagoda’ include the Chen Family Archway and the former residence of Chen Wangdao. Inside the residence, there are the Chen Family Ancestral Hall, the Fu Ji Hall, and Chen Cai’e’s Study. The Chen Family Archway spans three facades, with a nanmu structure above the archway. The eaves and corners of the archway are ornate, and the central plaque is inscribed with ‘Qing Dynasty Imperial Censor’ in large characters, while the lower plaque is engraved with ‘For Chen Wangdao, the Imperial Censor of Nanjing during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty’. Various lifelike birds and beasts are also carved on the wooden frame.
