Pi Shi Street: A Historic Trade Center for Leather Goods

Pi Shi Street, once known as the ‘Leather Goods Street’ in Yangzhou, has been a symbol of fashion and elegance since ancient times. Historically, the affluent region of Yangzhou naturally thrived with leather trade, leading to the formation of ‘Leather Goods Street’, which is Pi Shi Street. This street, as one of the hallmarks of the ancient city’s historical streets, is paved with granite and macadam. The operators of leather goods in Pi Shi Street are mostly from other regions. They have brought their hometown’s specialty snacks to Yangzhou, such as mutton shops, steamer shops, sesame seed cake shops, and bellows shops. Over time, these small alleys where these shops are located have become known as Mutton Alley, Steamer Alley, Big Sesame Alley, Small Sesame Alley, and Bellows Alley. Today, these alleys still exist adjacent to Pi Shi Street. Although they are quieter now, they were once bustling and remain faithful witnesses to the past. The entire street is open throughout the year from 10:00 to 22:00, with specific business hours subject to the day’s operations.
