The ancient well is located at the entrance of the west gate archway of Gaochun Old Street. It is also known as ‘Zhongjie Well’. The well mouth has a diameter of 0.55 meters. The original well was three zhang deep. Now it is 6.3 meters deep. It is said that in 1762 (the 27th year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign), during Emperor Qianlong’s third southern inspection tour, he came to Gaochun. To welcome the emperor, local officials dug a new well on the old street for imperial use.
The well water is pure, cool and sweet. Emperor Qianlong was full of praise after drinking it. Since then, later generations have called this well ‘Qianlong Ancient Well’. In March of the 14th year of Daoguang, there was a major epidemic in Chunxi Town. The river water was polluted and no one dared to drink it. The residents of the old street got water from this well to tide over the difficulties. Since then, they have had a deeper affection for this well. Regularly, donations are made by Xiche Gongtang for well cleaning. Open all year round and open all day.
