Qiaoyuan Garden, also known as Rishe Garden, was built in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It is one of the oldest existing gardens in northern Jiangsu. During the Wanli period of Emperor Shenzong, Chen Yingfang, the imperial inspector of the imperial stables, built a garden next to his residence. Taking the sentence ‘The garden becomes interesting with daily visits’ from Tao Yuanming’s ‘Returning Home’ in the Jin Dynasty, it was named ‘Rishe Garden’.

Qiaoyuan Garden is a famous scenic spot in Taizhou. In 1956, Mei Lanfang returned to his hometown and stayed here. Qiaoyuan Garden has a small and elegant layout and has the charm of gardens in southern Jiang. The entire garden is centered around Shanxiang Thatched Cottage. In the south, a pool is dug and mountains are piled up to form the main scenery. In the north, a garden is opened up. In front of the thatched cottage, the pool water meanders and is surrounded by rocks.

On the main peak stand three stalagmites, which are also like three long swords pointing straight to the sky. The major feature of the garden is the emphasis on the configuration of flowers and trees. The naming of various buildings is often related to this. For example, Erfen Bamboo House, Jielü Mountain House, Songchui Pavilion, Yinchao Pavilion, Jiaoyu Veranda, Wengui Boat, etc. The core scenic area is mainly composed of arbors.

The ancient cypresses on the rockery are highlighted. Tall pines are often supplemented beside high pavilions such as Songchui Pavilion and Yinchao Pavilion, as well as plum forests. Bamboos and houses are hidden behind mountain hollows. Winter sweet and osmanthus are planted in front and behind the courtyard. Peonies and plantains are planted around the veranda. From the time configuration, it can also adapt to the changes of four seasons’ scenery.
