Qi’s Scholar-Soldier Residence is located at No. 94 Qingyuan Street, Kou’an Carved Building Scenic Area. It was constructed by Qi Shiguang, the ninth-generation patriarch of the Qi family, after he passed the military imperial examination with distinction in the second year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1622 AD). The residence faces south and is a typical Ming Dynasty architectural complex, with the existing structures including the main entrance hall, opposite hall, open hall, scroll house, and the main hall, making up five consecutive sections. Above the main beam of the open hall hangs a pair of gilded carved dragon pattern ‘Imperial Decree’ wooden niches. In front of the door stands a 400-year-old ancient boxwood tree.
In 2010, the residence was listed as a municipal cultural heritage site by Taizhou City and underwent restoration. It is now transformed into the ‘Chinese Martial Scholar-Soldier Museum,’ housing seven exhibition halls that showcase Qi’s cultural heritage, ancient weaponry, military tactics, and knowledge about martial scholars. It comprehensively presents the evolution of ancient military examinations and recreates scenes from these exams.
