Quyuan Garden is the former residence of Yu Yue, a famous scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. It is named ‘Quyuan Garden’, which is derived from the life philosophy of Laozi that ‘being flexible leads to completeness’. The main scenic spots in the garden include Chunzaitang, Lezhitang, Rencunxuan, Xiaozhuliguan and others. Quyuan Garden covers a total area of 2,800 square meters. The main residence is in the middle. It is divided into five entrances from south to north. On its east side, there are several accessory rooms built. The main residence and the accessory rooms are separated by a service alley and are interconnected. The west and north parts are the garden area, forming a L-shape and semi-surrounding the main residence.
Opening hours: Open all year round from 9:00 to 16:30. Must-see tips: Yu Yue (1821-1906), with the courtesy name Yinfu and self-titled as Quyuan Jushi, was from Deqing, Zhejiang Province. He was a successful candidate in the imperial examination in the 30th year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1850). Yu Yue’s academic research mainly focuses on Confucian classics, and also extends to various fields such as the study of philosophers, history, and exegesis, as well as traditional Chinese opera, poetry, novels, and calligraphy. His academic research is extensive and profound. He dedicated himself to academic research for more than 40 years. There were many scholars from home and abroad, including Japan and Korea, who came to learn from him, and he was respected as a master of朴学. He is the great-grandfather of modern scholar Yu Pingbo. Zhang Taiyan, Wu Changshuo, and Inoue Shinsei of Japan were all his disciples. Yu Yue won the admiration of examiner Zeng Guofan with his poem ‘The flowers have fallen but spring remains, and the sky is still bright and sunny’.
