It is said that the residential houses of Baijianlou were built by Dong Fen, the minister of Rites in the Ming Dynasty, for his female relatives and servants. When it was first built, there were about a hundred buildings, hence the name. The characteristic of Baijianlou is that it winds along the river course and is connected by stone bridges. With white walls, black tiles and flowing river water, it presents a typical scenery unique to the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River.
