The Rockery Waterfall, constructed in 1954, marks the first scenic spot built in Xuanwu Lake after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was designated as a cultural heritage site in Nanjing in 1992.
Through the art of stacking stones to form mountains and channeling water to create pools, the landscape embodies the essence of mountains as the backbone and water as the veins, creating a garden scene that conveys the poetic image of a waterfall cascading down in three tiers. In front of the artificial mountain, stands the ‘Child Worshipping Guanyin Stone’, a remnant from the Northern Song Dynasty’s Flower and Stone Gang, named for its striking resemblance to the subject. The larger stone measures 6.3 meters in height and 0.9 meters in width, known as the ‘Guanyin Stone’; the smaller one, 4.2 meters in height and 0.8 meters in width, is referred to as the ‘Child Stone’. These stones possess the typical characteristics of ‘slenderness, permeability, leakage, and wrinkling’, making them rare treasures among Taihu stones. The Rockery Waterfall is open to visitors all year round, with full-day access.Rockery Waterfall
