San Yuan Mansion, originally known as ‘Lian Hua Ju’, is located at the southern part of Lian Hua Island in Yangcheng Lake. It was the retreat of Qian Zhenfeng, an ancestor of the Qian family, who sought refuge from the chaos of the world. This ‘Lian Hua Ju’ was originally named ‘Cheng Xin Tang’, but it has been elegantly referred to as ‘Lian Hua Ju’ because of the vast green waters and acres of lotus ponds that have been blooming brilliantly in front of the residence since ancient times.

Suzhou is a city of cultural and historical significance in China, known for its clear and elegant atmosphere and its talented and virtuous people. Over a history of more than 1300 years of the imperial examination system, Suzhou produced nearly 3000 Jinshi (successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations), including 50 Wenwu Zhuangyuan (top scholars in both civil and military examinations), leading the nation and earning the reputation of ‘The Hometown of Zhuangyuan’. Among these 50 Zhuangyuan, Qian Qi was a remarkable figure who ‘achieved the triple crown’ (top in the provincial, metropolitan, and palace examinations).
