Nothing compares to the gentle spring breeze and the soft clouds, a perfect escape from the mundane. On a spring day with the wind caressing our faces, we stole a half-day of leisure and ventured to this small island with friends for a weekend getaway.
Starting from Suzhou city center, we navigated to SanShan Island’s Changqi Wharf, which took about an hour by car, with parking facilities available right across the wharf. Alternatively, one could navigate to Xishan Shigong Mountain Wharf and take a ferry or speedboat to the island. Ferry tickets cost 20 yuan, plus a 78 yuan island admission fee. Speedboats are also an option at 280 yuan per boat, with the ferry taking over 20 minutes to reach the island, while speedboats take about four to five minutes.
Upon arrival, we headed to our pre-booked farmhouse or B&B to drop off our luggage and begin our two-day island adventure. The island loop is not very large, approximately 7 kilometers in circumference, allowing for a leisurely walk or a bicycle ride for two, stopping to enjoy the lake breeze, which is quite pleasant.
On the first day, we strolled along the banks of the willow trees from Xianqi Wharf and soon came across a wetland teahouse, a tranquil and serene spot where we could fish or row a boat. However, I preferred brewing a pot of tea, inhaling the faint scent of tea, gazing at the small fish in the lake, and daydreaming, which made me feel utterly relaxed. Continuing on, we cycled a bit further and, following the signs, arrived at the water sports area where we could operate our own motorboats, accommodating four people for thirty minutes.
Professional staff instructed us on how to operate the boats, and it’s highly recommended to experience driving one on the shimmering lake surface. The tranquility and the view are truly unforgettable.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there is also an adventure base with high ropes and cliff rappelling. If you’re into such adventures, you must not miss the chance to challenge yourself here. Time flies, and before we knew it, it was almost evening. Cycling slowly along the island’s road, we passed by Xihu Wharf, which has straw-stacked boat sheds with unique characteristics. I believe Xihu Wharf is the best spot on the island to watch the sunset. Standing by the lake with a slight squint, watching the distant sun, and faintly seeing the small islands in the distance creates a serene experience.
On the second day, we could wake up early to watch the sunrise. Set an alarm and head to the east side of the island to witness the sun slowly rising from the lake surface before returning for breakfast. Today, we prepared to go hiking. Starting from Niangniang Temple, we embarked on the hiking trail. After climbing many steps, we reached Xiantian, a very narrow and steep path, which is considered the essence of this mountain, along with Banzi Peak, the Sphinx-like rock, and the Sunset Slope.
While the mountains are not particularly tall, they lack the breathtaking views of other, grander mountains. However, their own delicacy and natural beauty can be savored for a long time. For delicious recommendations, most of the island’s dining options are centered around agritourism, which I quite enjoy. The dishes are fresh and delicious, with just the right balance of saltiness. Currently, the island is abundant in Biluochun tea, which can be brought home if you like. After completing this journey, I am also preparing to leave. This trip, which cleanses the soul, allows me to maintain a tranquil state of mind for a while. Upon returning to the bustling metropolis, I will miss the leisurely pace of this island. In the future, when faced with troubles and worries, I will know that I can come to this island to seek a moment of peace.
