Shangbao Mountain is located in Daqiu in the west of Wenling, at the junction with Yueqing. Ranges of peaks emerge horizontally from the mountainside and ascend straight up. The flat areas are like screens or barriers. The steep areas have towering cliffs. The mountains are lined up in rows. The peaks pierce the clouds and are more than 100 meters high. They stretch horizontally from west to east for several miles. There are huge rocks and solitary peaks such as Baizhang Rock and Jiangzhuang Rock connected in between, which is very spectacular. As an important part of the Yandang Mountain volcanic belt, during the Cretaceous period from 128 million to 108 million years ago, Tongzishan, like the nearby Yandang Mountain, experienced the processes of volcanic eruption, collapse, and resurrection and uplift. The remaining Baizhang Rock, Jiangzhuang Rock and other solitary peak landscapes are formed by the weathering and collapse of volcanic tuff. What is even more amazing is that on its mountainside, there is another natural landscape – Danxia landform. The red glutenite is cut and eroded by flowing water. After the hillside collapses, landform forms such as stone walls, stone peaks, and stone pillars with flat tops, steep bodies, and gentle foothills appear, ‘with a rich color like cinnabar and as bright as rosy clouds’. The jagged volcanic tuff peaks and the Danxia wonders of ‘layers of red city and patches of clouds’ combine multiple geological wonders in one. Open all year round and open all day.
