The Shangfangshan Forest Animal World in Suzhou was formerly known as the Suzhou Zoo. It was established on May 1, 1954 and is located at the eastern end of Baita East Road in the ancient city. On April 11, 2016, the Suzhou Zoo closed and relocated. It was relocated to the southern foot of Shangfang Mountain on Wuyue Road on the west bank of Shihu Lake. Herbivore Area 2 is located in the western part of the Shangfangshan Forest Animal World. It is currently composed of 4 groups of cages including the sika deer exhibition area, fallow deer exhibition area, and argali stadium. The cage area is about 270 square meters. Four kinds of animals such as sika deer, fallow deer, and argali are raised and exhibited. Representative animal in this area: fallow deer. The Primate Area is located in the southwest area of the Shangfangshan Forest Animal World. It is currently composed of 12 groups of cages including Monkey Island. The cage area is about 700 square meters. Fifteen kinds of animals such as golden snub-nosed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and ring-tailed lemurs are raised and exhibited. Representative animal in this area: golden snub-nosed monkey. The Predator Area is located in the northern part of the Shangfangshan Forest Animal World. It is currently composed of 11 groups of cages including the South China tiger exhibition area, Siberian tiger exhibition area, and white tiger exhibition area. The cage area is about 4,700 square meters. Eleven kinds of animals such as South China tigers, Siberian tigers, white tigers, African lions, and black leopards are raised and exhibited. Representative animal in this area: South China tiger. Bird and Poultry Area 1 is located in the southeast area of the Shangfangshan Forest Animal World. It is currently composed of a large wading bird area, pheasant exhibition area, and parrot house. The cage area is about 700 square meters. More than 50 kinds of animals such as oriental white storks, red-crowned cranes, demoiselle cranes, flamingos, and macaws are raised and exhibited.

The amphibian and reptile area is located in the central area of Shangfangshan Forest Animal World. It is currently composed of the turtle pond, the Chinese alligator exhibition area, etc. The area is about 481 square meters. Animals such as turtles, Chinese alligators, Burmese pythons, red-tailed boas, Pan’s box turtles, and radiated tortoises are raised and exhibited. The representative animal in this area: turtle. The South China tiger is one of the world’s top ten endangered species. Suzhou Zoo is listed as ‘Suzhou Breeding Base for South China Tigers in China’. It is one of the earliest professional institutions in China dedicated to the protection and research of South China tiger bases. It undertakes important tasks of South China tiger breeding research and popular science education. In order to create a better living environment for South China tigers, combined with the construction of the lakeside area of Shihu Scenic Area, the municipal government started the relocation project of the Suzhou South China Tiger Breeding Base in 2010 and relocated the base to the mountain col of Shangfangshan in Shihu Scenic Area, Suzhou.
