The Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum is located in a garden building on Fenyang Road, where it displays a variety of exquisitely crafted carvings, embroidery works, and lantern decorations, among other folk crafts. The museum itself is an artistically designed post-Renaissance building, known as the ‘Little White House’ due to its resemblance to the White House in the United States. The museum spans three floors; visitors can start their tour on the second floor via an external staircase. The second floor showcases a range of beautiful jade carvings, ivory carvings, wood carvings, lacquer carvings, inlays, inkstone carvings, bamboo carvings, and porcelain carvings. These artworks are must-see exhibits in the museum, with jade and ivory carvings being particularly exquisite and lifelike.
Proceeding to the third floor, visitors can explore embroidery, theatrical costumes, and weaving crafts, as well as observe artisans creating various crafts in the workshops. Paying attention to the elegant decorations within the building, one can sense the nostalgic atmosphere throughout. Constructed in 1905, this Western-style building originally served as the official residence of the Municipal Council’s Chief Executive. It still preserves many distinctive features, such as the bathroom on the third floor, which was built in sync with the main building, especially the three-dimensional shower installations and stained glass windows, which are sure to impress with the design standards of the time. Additionally, the spiral staircase from the second to the third floor has a vintage appearance, perfect for photography.
On the first floor, there are displays of paper-cuttings, lantern decorations, and paintings, along with a crafts shop selling various crafts. Some items, like paper-cuttings and wood carvings, are not expensive, making them affordable purchases for those who appreciate them. After viewing the exhibits, one can stroll on the large lawn in front of the Western-style building, which features a small pond with red carp. The museum is open from 09:00 to 11:30 and from 13:00 to 16:30, Tuesday through Sunday; closed all day on Mondays, with special arrangements for national holidays and other events to be announced separately.
