Shanghai, the birthplace of modern printing in China, is home to the China Printing Museum jointly established by Shanghai China Printing Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Printing Co., Ltd. of The Commercial Press. The museum, themed around the development of Shanghai’s modern printing history and the concept that ‘Printing makes culture more splendid and the world more civilized,’ showcases the historical evolution, development overview, and contributions of major Chinese publishing and printing enterprises such as The Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and printing houses to the revitalization of the national printing industry, promotion of Chinese excellent culture, and prosperity of China’s publishing and printing endeavors.
The museum includes exhibits on the labor movement history and martyrs of The Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company, which are part of Shanghai’s labor movement history and also part of the history of the Communist Party of Shanghai. Comprising a pre-hall, development history hall, corporate culture hall, technology and quality hall, production equipment hall, printing knowledge hall, and modern products hall, the museum spans an exhibition area of 1500 square meters. It provides a brief overview of the technology, equipment, processes, and characteristics of plate-making, printing, and binding, and details the origins and development history of ancient Chinese woodblock printing and movable type printing. Opening hours are year-round from Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00-16:00. The museum also offers a souvenir shop featuring cultural and creative products.Must Read
