Located at the intersection of Hankou Road, the Church of Grace is a church with a red exterior wall. Opposite it is the People’s Square. If you come from Nanjing West Road, you will pass by the church entrance, but most of the time the gate is closed because it is usually only open on Sundays for visitors. Here, you can feel the sanctity and solemnity of the church, listening to the believers singing hymns, allowing the soul to be cleansed as well. The Church of Grace was built in 1931, originally named Moot Hall, also known as ‘Moo Le Hall’. The church faces east and west, featuring a neo-Gothic style. The central part of the church is the main hall, which can accommodate a thousand people. In the southwest corner, there is a very conspicuous bell tower, adjacent to a four-story annex and an affiliated school. In 1936, an American Christian donated funds to install a 5-meter-high neon cross at the top of the church’s bell tower, making the church one of the most prominent in Shanghai and the Far East at that time. Today, a 5-meter-high neon cross is installed at the top of the tower, which is particularly eye-catching under the night light, becoming a major attraction in the People’s Square. The opening hours and business status are subject to the actual opening situation on the day.
