The Shanghai Chenghuangmiao is located in the Chenghuangmiao tourist area in the center of Shanghai. Also known as the Old Chenghuangmiao, it is a famous Taoist temple in Shanghai. Most tourists who come to the Chenghuangmiao tourist area are attracted by the snacks here and the Yu Garden. However, they don’t know that there is a quiet Taoist temple in the south of Yu Garden. And it is a place of blessing with a long history.
Here, you can feel the local religious culture. The Shanghai Chenghuangmiao was built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1403 – 1424). It is earlier than the Yu Garden. But it was severely damaged during the ‘Cultural Revolution’ and later restored to its original appearance after repair. There are currently nine halls in the temple, including the main hall, the Jiazi Hall, the God of Wealth Hall, the Cihang Hall, and the Chenghuang Hall. Above the main gate of the main hall hangs the plaque of ‘Chenghuangmiao’. Inside, there is a seated statue of the main god of Jinshan Mountain – General Huo Guang, Marquis of Bolu in the Han Dynasty. On the left is the literary judge, on the right is the military judge, followed by the day patrol and night inspection. Below the day patrol and night inspection are eight bailiffs. The Yuan Chen Hall is also known as the Sixty Jiazi Hall. Inside, the god of the year corresponding to the sixty Yuan Chen is enshrined. Believers worship the god of the year of their life in this hall and pray for peace and good fortune every year. Inside the Cihang Hall, the Eye Mother Empress, Cihang Bodhisattva, and Empress Tianhou are enshrined. Inside the God of Wealth Hall, the God of Wealth, the Immortal Official of Bringing Treasures, the Immortal Official of Bringing Good Luck, and the Immortal Official of Gathering Treasures are enshrined. Inside the Wenchang Hall, the Wenchang Emperor is enshrined. The two children on the left and right are called the deaf in heaven and the mute on earth. The last hall inside the Chenghuangmiao is the Chenghuang Hall. In the center of the Chenghuang Hall, a wooden statue of the god of Shanghai county with a red face is enshrined, sitting upright. Inside the hall, it is furnished like the public hall of the county yamen in the Ming Dynasty, with strict guards of honor. To the east of the Chenghuang Hall is the Parents Hall, where the parents of the god of Shanghai county are enshrined. To the west of the Chenghuang Hall is the Empress Hall, where the wife of the god of Shanghai county, Madam Chu, is enshrined. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:30 to 16:30.
