The Shanghai Film Museum is located on Caoxi North Road, at the former site of the Shanghai Film Studio, which is a short walk south from the Xujiahui commercial district. The museum stands where the Shanghai Film Studio compound used to be, marking the birthplace of Chinese cinema and now serves as the office for the Shanghai Film Group. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the statue of workers, peasants, and soldiers at the museum’s entrance, which is the emblem of Shanghai Film Studio, visible at the beginning of films produced by the studio.
The museum is divided into four floors. Entering through the main gate, the service desk is on the left, and a café is on the right. The recommended visitation route starts from the fourth floor and descends floor by floor, with an elevator next to the service desk that takes you directly to the fourth floor. As you step out of the elevator, you are welcomed by the Star Avenue, where you can walk on the dazzling ‘red carpet’ and experience the star treatment. The theme of the fourth floor is ‘Memory of Light and Shadow’, where you can see numerous photos of filmmakers, statues of movie masters, and their working environments, as well as shooting scenes from classic films like ‘Sentries under the Neon Lights’.
The third floor’s theme is ‘The Long River of Film History’, where you can learn about the growth history of Shanghai’s film industry and the development of dubbed films and animations through various images and texts. You can also view various physical exhibits, such as the prop album of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, the production files of ‘Hibiscus Town’, the character design drafts of ‘Ne Zha Conquers the Sea’, and other precious materials. Additionally, there are items like the bicycle ridden by film star Sun Dao Lin, the shawl worn by Bai Yang, and props from ‘Battles in the North and South’.
The second floor exhibition area, themed ‘Film Factory’, allows you to visit TV recording studios, sound recording studios, or explore animation studios, post-production studios, and makeup and costume studios. You can also try dubbing for film clips, attempt editing, learn about and experience the film production process, and operate visual imaging devices to understand the principles of film imaging, which is very interesting.
The final floor is named ‘Hall of Honor’, where the achievements of Shanghai’s century-long film journey are displayed. You can see images and texts of dozens of classic masterpieces, as well as over 600 trophies received. Additionally, you can see the shooting scenes from the film ‘Crow and Sparrow’, with wax figures vividly recreating the scene of older generation filmmakers like Zheng Junli, Zhao Dan, and Sun Dao Lin shooting on set.
