Located on Caoxi North Road, the Shanghai Film Museum is situated at the former site of the Shanghai Film Studio, a short walk south from the Xujiahui commercial district. The museum was once the Shanghai Film Studio compound, the birthplace of Chinese cinema, and is now the office location for the Shanghai Film Group. Upon arrival, one is greeted by the Worker, Peasant, Soldier statue in front of the museum, a symbol of Shanghai Film, visible at the start of all films produced by Shanghai Film.
The museum spans four floors, with the service desk to the left upon entering and a café to the right. The visiting sequence begins on the fourth floor, descending floor by floor, accessible via the elevator next to the service desk. As you exit the elevator, you are welcomed by the Star Boulevard, where you can walk the red carpet under the shining lights and experience the star treatment. The theme of the fourth floor is ‘Memory of Light and Shadow’, where you can see numerous photographs of filmmakers, statues of film masters, and their working environments, as well as shooting scenes from classic films such as ‘Sentries Under Neon Lights’.
The third floor exhibition is themed ‘History of Cinema’, where you can view various film images and texts, learn about the growth history of Shanghai cinema, and the development of dubbed films and animations. You can also see various physical exhibits, such as the prop album of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, production files of ‘Hibiscus Town’, character design drafts of ‘Nezha Conquers the Sea’, and other valuable materials. Additionally, you can see the bicycle ridden by film star Sun Daoling, the shawl worn by Bai Yang, and props from ‘Battles of South and North’.
The second floor exhibition hall, themed ‘Film Factory’, allows you to visit TV recording studios, sound recording studios, animation studios, post-production studios, and costume and makeup studios. You can also dub film segments yourself, try editing, learn and experience the film production process, and operate visual imaging devices to understand the principles of film imaging, which is very interesting.
The final floor, named ‘Hall of Honor’, displays the achievements of Shanghai Film over a century, with textual and visual materials of dozens of classic masterpieces, as well as over 600 trophies received. You can also see shooting scenes from the film ‘Crow and Sparrow’, vividly recreated with wax figures of the older generation of filmmakers such as Zheng Junli, Zhao Dan, and Sun Daoling shooting on set.
