The Shanghai Fire Museum is located next to the Shanghai Fire Bureau on Zhongshan Middle Road. Here, you can see various old-style fire trucks and firefighting equipment in the form of actual items and models, and also learn about rich fire prevention and escape knowledge. It offers insight into the history of Shanghai’s fire services. Whether you are a citizen or a student, you can come here to gain knowledge about firefighting and broaden your horizons. The museum has three floors, but the exhibition halls are not very large. The first floor displays models and actual fire trucks and engineering vehicles, including the original 1930s wooden mechanical ladder truck and the scaled model of the 1908 MerryWeather steam fire engine, with their unique and retro appearances.
The second floor mainly focuses on fire prevention, escape, and first aid knowledge, as well as more about the principles of combustion. A highlight of this floor is the citizen escape experience project, which allows participants to learn the correct way to escape from a fire scene through personal experience. In addition, there are high-tech interactive multimedia exhibits such as a dynamic 4D cinema simulating fire scenes and a virtual fire science laboratory.
The third floor has even richer exhibits, showcasing not only the history of Shanghai’s fire services but also many old firefighting equipment and old photos of Shanghai. You can see the well-preserved, historically significant wooden double-lever manual pump used for firefighting by the people at the end of the Qing Dynasty, as well as the fire hydrant built in 1881, which appeared on the streets of Shanghai two years earlier than the Yangshupu Waterworks.
