Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park

There is a nearly 300-meter cherry blossom avenue in Gongqing Forest Park. The way cherry blossoms are planted in this park is different from other parks. The cherry blossoms in Gongqing Forest Park are scattered throughout the entire forest, with a thousand-acre forest landscape as the background. Gongqing National Forest Park is located in the northeast of Shanghai urban area and by the Huangpu River.

It is a forest park relatively close to the urban area of Shanghai. The large expanse of forest in Gongqing Forest Park is the result of afforestation in the 1950s. There are also landscapes such as hills, large lawns, lakes, and streams here, with a beautiful environment. You can come to the park to go boating, barbecue, ride horses, or play entertainment items such as pirate ships and target shooting.

Even taking a walk, cycling, and breathing fresh air in the park is also a kind of enjoyment. Gongqing Forest Park makes full use of the park’s beautiful garden landscape and rich forest resources. Combined with the characteristics of seasonal changes and traditional festivals, it regularly launches multiple theme cultural activities every year. The main ones are the four-season flower exhibitions: spring flower exhibition, summer aromatic plant exhibition, autumn Shanghai chrysanthemum exhibition, winter narcissus exhibition, as well as the urban forest carnival and beer festival during the National Day holiday, and the forest music festival in late October.

The urban forest flower exhibition generally opens in late March. It mainly relies on the park’s original forest landscape. With begonia flower forest, peach blossom forest, and cherry blossom forest as the three main viewing areas, comprehensive environmental layout is carried out. Through large-scale large trees, wildflowers on the ground, creative scenic spots, and a large number of flowering trees and shrubs, a large forest sea of flowers unique in the urban area is formed.

Layers upon layers, three-dimensional and diverse, allowing flower viewers to enjoy the great time surrounded by hundreds of flowers in the forest. The aromatic plant exhibition is held every summer. It mainly exhibits a variety of aromatic plants such as mint, rosemary, and lavender, allowing citizens and tourists to feel the unique fresh fragrance of nature in the hot summer. In the golden autumn season, Gongqing Forest Park takes the chrysanthemum exhibition and chrysanthemum art display as the carrier, with the vast and profound forest as the background.

Through outdoor three-dimensional scenic spots, shaped chrysanthemums, and fine chrysanthemum exhibitions as the content, and accompanied by multiple interactive theme cultural activities such as ‘chrysanthemum ceramic calligraphy and painting’, ‘chrysanthemum cloth art painting’, and ‘chrysanthemum tea art’, it excavates cultural connotations, shows chrysanthemum art, and inherits and carries forward the essence and profoundness of traditional Chinese chrysanthemum culture.

At the end of winter and the beginning of spring every year, when narcissus flowers are in full bloom, Gongqing Forest Park holds the annual ‘New Year’s Citizen Narcissus Modeling Competition’ for citizens and tourists to make friends through flowers and display their carefully carved and maintained narcissus. Gongqing Forest Park has four gates, among which the south gate and the west gate are the main entrances.

Taking a bus usually allows entry from the west gate. There are more bus lines at the gate. For self-driving, you can go to the south gate because the park’s large parking lot is built at the south gate.

Upon entering from the West Gate of the park, you’ll first encounter the entertainment area. On the left, there are facilities such as a pirate ship, rapids ride, and a skating rink. On the right, you’ll find roller coasters, carousels, bumper cars, and a paintball shooting range. There is also a forest train available for rides. During weekends, some entertainment projects require a long queue to enjoy.

Moving further in from the left, there is a dedicated barbecue and camping area as well as a horse riding field. The barbecue area is particularly popular during weekends and holidays. Deeper into the park, there is an artificial lake where you can boat or try the zipline across to the other side. The deeper part of the park is mainly composed of forests and lawns, providing a quieter environment suitable for walking or resting.

At the southeast end of the park, near the Huangpu River, you can watch the ships passing by on the river. There are several kiosks within the forest park selling beverages and snacks, which are slightly more expensive than outside. There are also restaurants in the park, but the prices are relatively high, so it is recommended to bring your own dry food. Additionally, diagonally opposite the South Gate of the forest park, there is a small scenic spot called ‘Wan Zhu Garden,’ which is part of the forest park.

Wan Zhu Garden is not large and is filled with bamboo forests, featuring the Jiangnan landscape of small bridges and flowing water. Entry is allowed with a ticket to the forest park.
