The exhibition system of the Shanghai History Museum is composed of permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions are located in the East Building, which includes ‘Ancient Shanghai’ and ‘Modern Shanghai’. The first floor serves as the ‘Prelude Hall’, the second floor is dedicated to ‘Ancient Shanghai’, and the third and fourth floors house ‘Modern Shanghai’ along with the ‘Final Hall’.


Meanwhile, special and temporary exhibitions are situated in the South Hall of the first floor of the East Building and the first to third floors of the West Building. In addition to this, the venue, in line with its architectural characteristics, adheres to the principle of ‘taking urban history as the context, with a focus on revolutionary history’, comprehensively sorting out the historical context of Shanghai and showcasing the significant milestones and major revolutionary historical events in various historical periods of urban development.


The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; closed all day on Mondays; and open from 09:00 to 17:00 on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day. Essential tips for visitors include: 1. Free admission to the public, with a daily limit of 10,000 visitors; 2. Groups of 20 or more must make a reservation three days in advance, and the museum offers free guided tours for groups of 20 or more; 3.


The museum provides several scheduled guided tours daily, and visitors can also rent audio guides.
