The Shanghai Museum has more than 120,000 exquisite collections, gathering historical relics of various dynasties. Especially ancient bronze ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings are very distinctive. Among them, the Western Zhou Dynasty Dake Tripod, the Spring and Autumn Period Zizhong Jiang Plate, as well as the Tang Dynasty’s ‘Painting of Elegant Hermits’ and Wang Xianzhi’s ‘Yatouwan Tie’ of the Eastern Jin Dynasty are all world-renowned national treasure-level collections. In the Ancient Chinese Bronzes Gallery of the Shanghai Museum, there is the treasure of the town hall – the Western Zhou Dynasty Dake Tripod, as well as treasures such as the Spring and Autumn Period Sacrificial Zun and Zizhong Jiang Plate. In the Ancient Ceramics Gallery, there are exquisite pieces such as the Shang Dynasty primitive celadon zun, the Tang Dynasty Yue kiln begonia-shaped large bowl, a set of Song Dynasty Ru kiln plates, and the Yuan Dynasty Jingdezhen kiln blue and white lotus pot. The ancient calligraphy collection includes masterpieces of a generation such as Wang Xizhi’s ‘Shangyu Tie’, Wang Xianzhi’s ‘Yatouwan Tie’, and Huizong of the Song Dynasty’s thin gold ‘Thousand Character Essay’. In the ancient painting gallery, Tang Sun Wei’s ‘Painting of Elegant Hermits’, Dong Yuan’s ‘Summer Mountains Scroll’ of the Five Dynasties, and Song Liang Kai’s ‘Scroll of Stories of Eight Eminent Monks’ are all rare treasures. In addition, there is the Sculpture Gallery that treasures ancient Buddhist statue sculpture art, the Minority Nationalities Craft Gallery that displays traditional handicrafts of ethnic minorities, the Jade Ware Gallery with fine jade wares of various dynasties in China, and the Ming and Qing Furniture Gallery that reflects the life style of Ming and Qing furniture. The collection scale of the Seals Gallery of Past Dynasties and the Coins Gallery of Past Dynasties ranks among the forefront of national museums. The Shanghai Museum also frequently holds special exhibitions (sometimes admission tickets are sold as appropriate for visiting), displaying thematic exhibitions mainly of various domestic and foreign cultural relics, artworks, calligraphy and paintings. Opening hours: From January 1st to October 31st, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From November 3rd to November 4th, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From November 11th to November 14th, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From November 17th to November 21st, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From November 24th to November 28th, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From December 1st to December 31st, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00; From January 1st to October 31st, Monday, closed all day; From November 3rd to November 4th, Monday, closed all day; From November 11th to November 14th, Monday, closed all day; From November 17th to November 21st, Monday, closed all day; From November 24th to November 28th, Monday, closed all day; From December 1st to December 31st, Monday, closed all day; From November 1st to November 2nd, 09:00 – 21:00; From November 5th to November 10th, 09:00 – 21:00; From November 15th to November 16th, 09:00 – 21:00; From November 22nd to November 23rd, 09:00 – 21:00; From November 29th to November 30th, 09:00 – 21:00. On Fridays and Saturdays in November and during the period from November 5th to November 10th, night sessions are added and the opening hours are extended to 21:00 (the latest entry time is 19:00). The daily day session has a limit of 8000 people.
The museum exhibits limit the number of visitors to 3000 each evening, with reservations made in time slots.
