The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is conveniently located next to the Oriental Pearl Tower, offering visitors the opportunity to admire a variety of freshwater and marine life from around the world, as well as entertaining animal performances. The aquarium’s four underwater tunnels are particularly popular, allowing visitors to walk among sharks, turtles, and other sea creatures swimming overhead, providing a panoramic view of the magical underwater world.
In addition to the unique fish species such as the Australian archerfish, African polypterids, Southeast Asian white hammerhead sharks, South American electric eels, and arapaimas, the aquarium is also home to precious animals like spotted seals, Antarctic penguins, and Chinese alligators, as well as adorable seahorses, the museum’s treasured weedy sea dragons, and ribbon sea dragons. The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is one of the few aquariums worldwide with a dedicated China zone to showcase China’s unique aquatic life, including many national protected animals such as the Chinese suckerfish and Chinese alligator.
Moreover, the ‘Special Exhibition Area’ features species-themed scientific exhibitions aimed at deepening the understanding of marine life and strengthening marine conservation awareness. Young people can also learn about various marine science and education knowledge in the ‘Marine Classroom.’ The opening hours vary by season: January 1 to June 7 from 09:00 to 18:00; June 8 to June 9 from 08:30 to 20:30; June 10 to June 30 from 09:00 to 18:00; July 1 to August 31 from 09:00 to 21:00; September 1 to September 30 from 09:00 to 18:00; October 7 to December 31 from 09:00 to 18:00; October 1 to October 6 from 09:00 to 21:00. Preferential policies: Children under 1 meter in height must be accompanied by a paying adult and enter free of charge; children between 1.0 meters (inclusive) and 1.4 meters (inclusive) must be accompanied by a paying adult and receive a discount. Seniors over 60 years old with ID or senior citizen cards receive a discount. Disabled individuals with valid identification receive a discount. Active-duty military personnel with valid identification receive a discount. Retired senior cadres with valid identification receive a discount.
Service facilities: Parking is available at the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium Parking Lot, with a reference price of ¥10 per hour, located at 1388 Lujiazui Ring Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai (near the Oriental Pearl Tower), with a capacity of 500 spaces. WIFI is available throughout the park with the account ‘shanghaihaiyangshuziuguan-freewifi’ and password ‘verification login’. Luggage storage is free and located at the visitor center. Stroller rental is free and without deposit at the main entrance. Restrooms are located at the corners of various main roads within the scenic area.
