The Shanghai Post Museum is located on the north bank of the Suzhou River, housed within the historic Shanghai General Post Office building. Within this ancient edifice, visitors can witness the intriguing train carriage post office, various antique mailboxes and letterboxes, and learn about the evolution of postal services.
Originally constructed in 1924, the General Post Office building features Romanesque columns, a spiral staircase, and ornate chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, all indicative of European architectural style. The building is designed in a ‘U’ shape, with the ground floor atrium displaying models of the Qing Dynasty postal carriage, the first mail transport vehicle acquired in 1917, the first regular airmail route aircraft, and the ‘mobile post office’ train carriage, along with a scene from the Qing Dynasty post office.
The second floor boasts a spacious postal hall divided into four exhibition areas, detailing the history of postal development from ancient to modern times, both domestically and internationally. Visitors can see a variety of peculiarly shaped old mailboxes and letterboxes, and the treasure hall showcases numerous rare stamps, such as the ‘Penny Black’, ‘Large Dragon Stamp’, and the ‘Green Robe Red Lady’. Children can simulate writing letters and experience the feeling of delivering parcels in an old post office.
The fifth floor of the building is a rooftop garden with a Baroque-style clock tower at the southeast corner. Standing on this observation platform, one can enjoy the scenery of the Suzhou River and the beautiful views of both banks of the Pu River, making it an ideal spot for photography.
Opening hours are from Wednesday to Thursday, Saturday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00, with the museum closed all day on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. National holidays will be announced separately.
