Located on Ruijin South Road, the Shanghai Public Security Museum is the first museum in China dedicated to public security. It documents over a century of historical evolution of Shanghai’s police institutions since their establishment in 1854. The museum houses a variety of criminal investigation materials, case photos, and police gear, making it an educational destination for children. Particularly appealing to young people are the famous firearms from around the world, including those used by notable figures such as Sun Yat-sen, which are worth viewing. The museum spans seven floors, with the first to fourth floors being the main exhibition areas displaying all regular exhibits. The first floor showcases police vehicles from various eras, along with three groups of sculptures reflecting public security themes. The second floor is the Public Security History Hall, which details the historical evolution of Shanghai’s police institutions, displaying various police badges, uniforms, medals, and wax figures of Indian, British, and Chinese police from old Shanghai. The third floor consists of the Criminal Investigation Hall, Public Order Hall, Traffic Hall, and Detention Hall, displaying images from major murder cases. Visitors who may be uncomfortable with such content are advised to skip these exhibits. Additionally, visitors can see many confiscated weapons and firearms. The fourth floor is dedicated to the Firefighting Hall, Equipment Hall, Heroes Hall, and Police Exchange Hall, highlighting the professional functions of various police departments and international exchanges. The museum’s ‘World Famous Firearms Exhibition’ features over two hundred guns, including rifles, submachine guns, and machine guns made in more than ten countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, and Russia. It also includes specialized weapons like curved-shot guns, knife guns, pen guns, and poison dart guns used for special missions. The museum’s treasure is a self-defense gun once used by Mr. Sun Yat-sen. Additionally, firearms used by prominent figures of old Shanghai, such as the Green Gang leaders Du Yuesheng and Huang Jinrong, are also on display and are quite precious. The museum is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:30; it is closed all day on Mondays, with special notices for national holidays.
