Shanghai Railway Museum

The Shanghai Railway Museum is located at the intersection of Tianmu East Road and Kangle Road. Its exhibition building and outdoor appearance are modeled after the Shanghai Station of the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, which was built in 1909 and features a classic British architectural style, and is constructed on its original site. Here, visitors can see actual locomotives, a variety of train parts and equipment, as well as models. You can also operate the control panel and experience being a high-speed train driver. Upon entering the museum area, the first thing you see are two vintage locomotives and a classic green carriage, alongside a train station platform that makes for a great photo spot.

The museum building is designed in a retro style, with its structure and decoration exuding a sense of history, though the museum itself is not large, consisting of only one floor. Inside, there is an abundance of textual and pictorial materials, as well as railway publications and badges from various eras, detailing the history of Shanghai and the East China Railway over more than a century. Numerous train and track-related equipment and instruments can be seen, along with direction signs used on various train carriages and everyday items from carriages through the ages. However, what might attract children the most are the various simulated miniature locomotive models.

In addition, the museum features a simulated high-speed train driver’s cab, where you can try your hand at driving a train towards the horizon. The museum is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-11:00 and 13:30-16:30; closed on Mondays. The service facilities include restrooms.
