A legend suggests that walking hand-in-hand with your loved one here ensures everlasting love. Every letter sent from the special love mailbox is stamped with a ‘LOVE’ stamp, offering a unique way for couples to express their affection.
Yuyuan Road, named after the famous Yu Garden, is an old street lined with private bungalows from the 1920s. It boasts a blend of different eras of Shanghai, with garden mansions and new style residential houses built in the decade following World War I. The street is also home to a variety of small shops, reflecting the diversity of global commerce, and residences of famous historical figures.
Duolun Road, a 500-meter-long ‘L’ street, is filled with vintage buildings and red or green brick sculptures, making it an ideal location for walks and photo shoots. It was home to literary and artistic figures such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Guo Moruo, and today, it features art galleries, quiet cafes, and small private collection galleries like the Chopstick Museum, the Nanjing Bell Museum, and the Wenfengqi Stone Collection Gallery.
Shaoxing Road, formerly known as ‘Route Victor Emmanuel III,’ offers a more mysterious and culturally rich experience compared to the bustling streets nearby. It is a cultural street with a strong literary vibe, offering a different perspective on Shanghai’s history and charm.
For nearly a century, small Shaoxing Road in Shanghai has been home to several famous publishers. It exudes a rich literary atmosphere. Shaoxing Road has its unique charm and is home to many leading publishers, magazines, and famous bookstores. The Old China Hand Reading Room is a signature spot here. Hong Kong celebrity Leslie Cheung once spent an afternoon here on the eve of his concert.
Xinhua Road, formerly known as ‘Avenue Amherest’, is one of Shanghai’s quietest roads. It has towering trees on both sides, scattering sunlight through sparse leaves. Xinhua Road is very serene and almost entirely residential, with many exotic gardens and bungalows. Known as the ‘Myriad Nations Lane’, it is full of exotic foreign architectural structures. Lane 211 and 329 are 70-year-old residential areas for foreigners. There are more than a dozen garden mansions here, all of different styles.
