On June 26, 2008, at 16:16, an author embarked on a one-day journey through Shanghai, visiting the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai International Convention Center. In their eyes, the Oriental Pearl Tower is a beacon of modernity and fashion, a sentiment that Shanghai itself embodies. It stands as the city’s most iconic structure.

During their stay, the skies were a constant azure, adorned with white clouds, a sight that felt long overdue. Venturing through the under-river tunnel by car, they arrived at the Pudong New Area. The Oriental Pearl Tower, nestled by the Huangpu River, showcased distinct charms in both daylight and at night. Its crimson tempered glass glistened like a precious diamond under the sun, exuding an elegance that was both alluring and refined. From afar, the tower appeared like a statuesque lady, tall yet not overbearing. However, upon closer inspection, the grandeur of the view was replaced by the sheer enormity of the structure.

The Oriental Pearl Tower boasts the highest ranking in Asia, with its ground floor housing a vast exhibition of globally renowned scenic spots. The author recalls an uncomfortable sensation in their eardrum from the speed of the elevator, though the exact velocity escapes their memory. At the summit, within the space capsule, they overlooked Shanghai, a cityscape peppered with buildings, cruise ships meandering along the Huangpu River, and the occasional small, sand-laden boats. Yet, the author found the panoramic view from the horizon to be more enchanting, leaving them somewhat disappointed as they descended from the capsule. The initial section of the elevator’s descent was crafted from tempered glass, offering a thrilling experience due to the rapid drop, but it evoked no other emotions.I wandered around Pudong. The Shanghai International Convention Center, composed of two hemispheres and located where the APEC conference had not yet been held, was particularly eye-catching by the river. It complements the Oriental Pearl Tower with its height and lowness. The Jin Mao Tower in the Pudong New Area has a total height of 420.5 meters and is one of the few tall buildings in the world. The spiral staircase and the golden trim are very elegant, leaving a deep impression on me. On Pudong Century Avenue, there are tall buildings on both sides, which is exactly what I like. Although I feel so small walking among them, I am also amazed by the greatness of mankind. Under the sunlight, everything is dazzling, and each building has its own style. I have always hoped that Jinan can have such a street one day. Perhaps it doesn’t need to be too long, just 50 meters is enough. I hope we can have it sooner, not when I’m too old to appreciate them.
