**Preface:**
“Over the hills and far away, beyond the sea, there lives a group of Smurfs. They are lively and smart, they are playful and witty.” This song is certainly familiar to many, as it is the theme song of the cartoon ‘The Smurfs’ that accompanied our growth. Although the Smurfs are already 62 years old, these little blue-hatted characters remain a nostalgic memory for us in the post-80s generation, and now many from the post-90s and 00s generations are also familiar with the story of the Smurfs. However, did you know that the Smurfs have come to Shanghai!

A few days ago, while shopping on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai, I stumbled upon my childhood blue friends, a group of adorable Smurfs. Seeing many Smurf figures in front of the Shimao Plaza, I approached out of curiosity to find out more, and it turned out to be a promotional event for the Shanghai Smurf Park Fun Carnival. For our post-80s generation, the Smurfs hold a special place in our hearts!

However, when we were children, we did not have the advanced network and media resources available today. Watching the complete series of Smurf cartoons was quite a challenge, so there were some regrets. This time, seeing the Smurfs in Shanghai and learning about the magical Smurf Park in Songjiang, I decided to go on a weekend trip to make up for the childhood regrets.

**Shanghai Shimao Elf City Theme Park:**
Opened in 2018 with a grand opening at the Shanghai Sheshan Shimao Intercontinental Hotel, which attracted many people who wanted to explore this architectural wonder. This time, driven by childhood nostalgia, we visited this internet-famous Pit Hotel, as the super cute Smurf family is right here – at the Shanghai Shimao Elf City Theme Park.

The Shanghai Shimao Elf City Theme Park is based on the classic work ‘The Smurfs’ created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, divided into two parts: the Pit Secret Realm and the Smurf Park. The entertainment projects here, such as the hundred-meter glass plank road, flying over the pit, and cliff hurricane, are quite thrilling. With the addition of the Smurfs this time, the experience was very enjoyable, and the photos we took were also very satisfying.

Although it is more suitable for family travel, there are many amusement facilities that are also very suitable for us ‘big kids’, especially in the Smurf Park where the scenes from the cartoons are presented before our eyes, wow, it feels great.

**Travel Route:**
Since the Shanghai Shimao Elf City Theme Park is located in Songjiang District of Shanghai, it is quite far from the city center, and the round trip is quite tight, so we simply chose to stay overnight at the Pit Hotel for a two-day, one-night short trip to Shanghai Songjiang.

– **D1:** Arrived at the Pit Hotel at noon on Saturday, checked in, and visited the Smurf air model in the hotel. In the afternoon, I went to the Smurf Park to hug these cute little guys.
– **D2:** Woke up naturally on Sunday morning, then went to the Pit Secret Realm, and finished playing in the afternoon before heading home.

**Accommodation Recommendation:**
The full name of the Pit Hotel is Shanghai Sheshan Shimao Intercontinental Hotel. The most internet-famous part of the hotel is its architectural design. The entire hotel is built 88 meters below the ground, clinging to the cliff wall of the pit, and is acclaimed by National Geographic as one of the ‘Top Ten Architectural Wonders of the World’.

We stayed in a rock-view room at the Sunken Rock Hotel. The room layout is simple yet without losing a sense of design. Stepping onto the balcony, you can see the beautiful scenery of the sunken pit, which is refreshing. At night, the hotel also arranges a light show. With spotlights on, the entire hotel seems to become a super high-tech stage, resplendent.

The room facilities are also very complete. Dyson hair dryer, JBL speaker, and Xiaodu voice-controlled electric curtains. Before going to bed at night, play music and then take a bath in the bathtub. So comfortable. During this time, the hotel also provides disinfectant, which is quite considerate.

When bored, go to check in at the bottom of the hotel and feel the grandeur of the entire sunken pit from bottom to top. Interestingly, we unexpectedly encountered a giant Smurfs inflatable model in the hotel. We couldn’t move again. We took a lot of crazy pictures here. Just to take pictures with the Smurfs, we also spent a lot of time here, looking for angles in various ways. For a while, we pinched his little feet, for a while we looked at him, for a while we shook hands with him, for a while we poked him, for a while we kissed him. Taking pictures with dislocation is also extremely enjoyable.

The magical thing about the Smurfs Park is that the scenic area has created and realized the scenes in the Smurfs animation one by one. Therefore, it has become the first Smurfs park in the Asia-Pacific region. The classic characters Papa Smurf, the goddess Smurfette, the wise Cookie Smurf, the troublemaker Clumsy Smurf, the inventor Handy Smurf, and the evil Gargamel break through the limitations of two-dimensional space and incarnate as characters in the ‘City of Elves’ and present themselves to everyone.

Entering the Smurfs Park, you are surrounded by the strong Smurfs theme. There are four areas: forest area, village area, Gargamel’s home, and outdoor area. Coming to this fantasy world, we couldn’t help but take a tour and take pictures first, and then experience various entertainment projects with peace of mind. Just as advertised, the entire venue is designed based on the scenes in the Smurfs animation. The naming, experience, and interaction methods of the amusement facilities in the park are all closely combined with the Smurfs. Walking in the venue, you may accidentally think that you are also a member of the Smurfs family.

As lucky as we are, as soon as we enter the Smurfs area, we encounter a float parade. The characters in the Smurfs animation are coming towards us. Many children can’t help but go up and ask for a group photo. However, we adults prefer the mushroom houses. There are many mushroom houses of various colors, shapes, and functions. These mushroom houses are also restored according to the appearance in the cartoon and are highly interactive. There are two fun places in the mushroom house. One is the Berry Roller Coaster, and the other is the Drawing Magic Brush. The Berry Roller Coaster is a real roller coaster. The car body is very cute, and the pink color is bursting with girlishness. Children can also play on this roller coaster. Parents can take them there. Although this roller coaster is not very large, it is still a bit exciting. When the car starts and speeds on the track, it still causes many people to scream. The Drawing Magic Brush is relatively quiet. Children can come here to draw, doodle, and build blocks. We also saw several children patting a projection wall. It turns out that this is an interactive mini-game projected on the wall. Alas, why didn’t we have such fun things when we were young.

After passing the mushroom house, we came to the Dark Laboratory. This is Gargamel’s territory. Originally, we thought it might be very scary, a bit like a haunted house. But the staff said there is nothing to be afraid of. So we lined up and walked in. It’s really not scary at all. Inside, through the design of scenes and sound effects, the territory of the villains in the Smurfs animation is restored. It’s also quite interesting. Finally, we slide down and it’s fun.

In front of the Dark Laboratory lies the Swamp Adventure, a game that is a bit intense. Have you all played Plants vs. Zombies? The weapon in this game is a pink and cute pea. Teams of four enter the battle state, and the data of your performance inside can be seen from the outside, along with rankings. Not bad at all.

In the Smurf Park, there is also an adventure area where we specifically experienced the Journey to the Center of the Earth. Entering the inner earth, there is a lot of scientific content about the earth’s core, presented before our eyes through light projection. What’s particularly fun is that the mine car entering the earth’s core can rotate 360 degrees, making it quite interesting to shuttle and rotate inside.

In addition to these fun activities, the Smurf Park is a huge indoor amusement park where Star Soaring and Candy World are places where both adults and children can enjoy themselves happily. I feel that if you bring your children here, they will definitely have a great time.

On the second day, we visited the Pit Wonderland. Although we came for the Smurfs, since we were already here, we wanted to complete our journey. The Pit Wonderland is the first phase of the Shanghai Shimao Elf City theme park, built around the Pit Hotel’s viewing platform and amusement park. The quiet path connecting the Pit Wonderland and the Smurfs Park is where the scenic area’s little train passes through. But personally, I think if it’s not too hot, walking is quite comfortable, looking at the plateau-like sky of the Magic City, the sky is blue, the Smurfs are blue, and I am blue too.

The Pit Wonderland is right next to the hotel. As soon as we entered the gate, everyone couldn’t wait to go to the glass plank road, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Pit Hotel’s beauty. But since there were many people, we first played the Cliff Hurricane beside the entrance of the glass plank road, which is the legendary pendulum. There were not many people, and the scenic area also had restrictions on the flow

**Exploring the Glass Plank Road and Pit Wonderland**

Walking on this glass plank road is the best and most direct place to see the hotel and the pit. On one side, you’ll hear the sound of the waterfall rushing down, while on the other side, there’s the noise of the glass plank road itself. Amidst all this, our little Smurf is quietly sitting on the hotel terrace, waving to us. We spent a long time on the glass plank road, mainly because it’s an excellent spot for taking photos. There are also a few children here who are having a great time.

**Additional Attractions and Future Plans**

There are many other amusement projects in the Pit Wonderland, but we spent too much time on the glass plank road, and time is limited. Therefore, we’ll wait until next time to invite a group of friends to play together.
