Shangou Gou Scenic Area is located 40 kilometers northwest of Hangzhou in Yuhang. The area is known for its clear mountains and waters, bamboo forests, waterfalls, fresh air, and farm cuisine, making it an ideal destination for family outings. It serves as an excellent weekend leisure choice for those who have been living in cities for a long time. Tangkeng and Maotang are the main attractions. Tangkeng is a bamboo-covered valley with natural scenery, primarily featuring waterfalls. Maotang focuses on farmhouse leisure, offering the chance to hike up waterfalls. The visitor center provides transportation to the ticket gates of Tangkeng and Maotang scenic spots.
Upon passing the mountain-shaped bamboo building Tangkeng Gate, one officially enters the Tangkeng scenic area. The ‘Eighteen Waterfalls Connecting to the Sky’ landscape, composed of eighteen waterfalls, and the peculiar rocks along the way are highlights not to be missed. A round-trip walk for sightseeing takes approximately 1.5 hours. Walking along the trail, you will pass by peculiar rock formations such as ‘Immortal Playing Chess’ and ‘Lion Paying Respects to Longevity’, leading to Cuiping Yingke. This is the ‘Eighteen Waterfalls Connecting to the Sky’, and nearby is the symbol of the entire scenic area – the Bamboo Dragon. The dragon’s spine climbs along the ridge of the mountain, invisible at its end, exuding grandeur. The water mist sprayed from the dragon’s mouth may form a rainbow on clear mornings. Continuing forward, Meihua Mountain Nong is a mountain stream and a three-tiered waterfall, with cliffs and plum blossoms complementing each other, creating a spectacular scene within the scenic area. There are several bamboo rafts here, where visitors can pole close to the waterfalls for photos and experience the coolness. The nearby Miànbì Xuān has a long corridor where one can rest, offering a nearly full view of the Bamboo Dragon’s body. Climbing further up along the cliff’s boardwalk, you will find that each of the subsequent waterfalls has its unique shape. Currently, one can climb up to the 9th waterfall, ‘Peacock Displaying its Screen’, with the areas beyond being undeveloped and not to be entered rashly. At Maotang, near the entrance, the ‘Maotang Die Waterfall’, known for its grandeur, can be seen from the Duiyì Pavilion. Hiking up waterfalls is an interesting recreational activity in Maotang. Equipped with straw sandals and a safety helmet, one can climb up the waterfalls, enjoying the coolness. The ancient village of Maotang should not be missed either, with its farmhouse leisure where visitors can taste naturally grown vegetables and dried bamboo shoots, and even stay overnight to savor the tranquility of the countryside. The village’s local breweries, tofu workshops, and rice cake workshops offer demonstrations of making rice cakes, brewing local liquor, and grinding tofu. If you find the taste appealing, you can purchase some to take home as gifts for friends and family. Additionally, Maotang also has historical sites such as the former site of the New Fourth Army’s uniform factory and ancient private schools, which can be visited together.
