Shaobo Town, located along the ancient canal, is one of the five major towns in Jiangdu. With the development of modern civilization, Shaobo Town has undergone significant changes, giving rise to the distinction between old and new streets. However, what remains unchanged are the ancient canal, the old flagstone streets, old alleys, old houses, and the great iron ox that controls the water. The junction of the old street and the canal is the ‘Grand Wharf’ at the center of the town, with the words ‘Grand Wharf’ inscribed by Emperor Qianlong. It is as famous as Zhenjiang’s ‘Small Wharf’ and Yangzhou’s ‘Imperial Wharf’. Emperor Qianlong made six southern tours, stopping in Shaobo six times, indirectly highlighting the importance of the Shaobo wharf on the Grand Canal. Along the north-south three-mile-long ancient flagstone street, there are more than 20 Ming and Qing dynasty ancient residences, including the former residence of Qing dynasty’s four ministers, Xu’s Mansion, Wang’s Mansion, and the Four Corners Building. There are also historical and cultural relics such as Xie Gong Temple and Yun Chuan Pavilion, which commemorate Xie An, as well as the Patrol Station, the Great King Temple, the Gantang Temple, the Imperial Horse Head, and the Longevity Palace. Various ancient steles unearthed over time are also being restored and exhibited. In addition, there is the Memorial Hall of the Sixth Battle in the Seven Battles and Seven Victories in Central Suzhou, the rare ancient Gantang tree, and the 300-year-old iron ox that controls the water. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
