The Shaobo Old Lock was constructed in 1936, serving as a lock on the canal from the Yangtze River. It is also one of the locks in China built using modern engineering techniques. Prior to the construction of the lock, the water depth in the canal was only about 1 meter throughout the year, and shipping was almost suspended during the dry seasons of winter and spring. After the lock was built, the minimum water depth in the canal was no less than 2.5 meters, allowing heavily loaded ships with a draft of 2 meters to navigate year-round. Now, the old lock has been abandoned. The opening times are daily at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 14:30, 15:30, and 16:30.
