Shaoxing Museum is located in the Yuewang City Historical and Cultural Protection Area on the west side of Shaoxing Ancient City. Although not large in scale, the museum offers a rich array of exhibits. If you wish to gain a general understanding of Shaoxing’s historical evolution, it is worth spending an hour here to savor the experience, which will be rewarding.
The main exhibition hall’s architectural exterior is modeled after the musical bronze house unearthed in Shaoxing, with the rest of the buildings featuring green vegetation flat roofs and outer walls adorned with Qing Stone from Shaoxing’s Donghu. In the square in front of the museum stands a bronze ancient sword sculpture, an ideal backdrop for visitors’ group photos and rich in cultural connotations.
The museum’s permanent exhibitions are divided into sections such as the Rise of the Great Yue, Building Cities and Capitals, and Civilizing the People through Rituals and Music, displaying mostly artifacts from the Wu and Yue era, including a replica of King Goujian’s sword, narrating the history of Yuezhou.
The museum offers paid professional guides for approximately 50 yuan per session, with a duration of about 45 minutes. In addition, by following the museum’s official WeChat and entering the artifact numbers, you can directly receive voice introductions and illustrations of the exhibits, which is very convenient.
Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:30; closed all day on Mondays; and open on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day from 09:00 to 16:30.
Service facilities include free guided tours arranged twice daily at 09:30 AM and 02:30 PM, waiting at the front desk service area. Chinese tour guide fees: 1-10 people at 50 yuan per session, over 10 people at 80 yuan per session (limited to basic exhibitions). Rental of audio guides: reference price is 10 yuan per unit with a deposit of 100 yuan per unit.
Must-see tips: 1. The museum is not far from Fushan, so it can be considered for a combined visit. 2. Audio guides can be rented in the museum for 10 yuan per unit with a deposit of 100 yuan.
