Shell Sand Beach

Shell Sand Beach, renowned for its unique composition, is situated on the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County. It can be reached by traveling approximately 39 kilometers along the Ping-E Highway.

The bay’s characteristic of reduced wave energy has led to the long-term erosion of shells and corals in the surrounding waters by the tide. Over time, these materials are crushed and ground into fine sand, accumulating in the bay. The beach is composed predominantly of shell fragments, coral reef fossils, and foraminifera fossil fragments, which account for about 98% of its content. This natural process has resulted in the formation of the world-famous ‘Shell Sand Beach’.
