The Shen Residence is a quintessential example of a wealthy Jiangnan family’s architecture, constructed in the ninth year of the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1870 AD). It was the former residence of Mr. Shen Bai Han, a member of the Chinese Students’ Alliance in Japan and a distinguished figure in southern Jiangsu. Having studied in Japan, Shen was deeply influenced by the philosophy of education for national salvation. Upon returning to China, he transformed the Fuli Academy into Fuli Primary School, dedicating himself to the educational cause.
The architectural layout of the Shen Residence features a unique blend of official and commercial elements, with a front shop, rear residence, left workshop, and right storefront, reflecting the rise of national industry and commerce in coastal ancient towns following the Self-Strengthening Movement. Comprising a dry wall gate, ceremonial hall, main hall, Le Shan Hall, study, and a multi-story hall, the residence is adorned with elegant architecture, refined decorations, and intricate carvings, epitomizing the classic Suzhou-style ancient architecture.
