Sheshan Zhongshan Virgin Mary Church is located on the hillside of Xishan in Songjiang District, Shanghai.
Originally constructed in the 20th year of the Guangxu period (1894), the church traces its roots back to the second year of the Tongzhi period (1863) when missionaries selected five bungalows on the hillside to build a sanatorium, which included a small chapel.

In the 20th year of the Guangxu period, the small chapel was rebuilt and named ‘Zhongshan Virgin Mary Church’.

In the ninth year of the Tongzhi period (1870), the ‘Three Saints Pavilions’ were constructed on the west side of the church square, comprising Joseph Pavilion, Virgin Mary Pavilion, and Jesus Sacred Heart Pavilion.

Meanwhile, along the mountain path leading to the church square, fourteen Stations of the Cross were arranged.

In the 33rd year of the Guangxu period (1907), a ‘Jesus Garden of Gethsemane’ statue was built at the top of the steps behind the church square on the north side.

From 1958, the church ceased religious activities.

After renovation in 1981, religious activities were resumed.

Opening hours and operational status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
