Located on Beijie Street in Baiju Town, Dafeng City, the Shi Nai’an Memorial Hall is a historical site of great significance. It is said that in the 26th year of the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1296-1371), Shi Nai’an, along with his student Luo Guanzhong, fled the chaos of war, crossing the Yangtze River and settling in the Baiju Field, near the Yellow Sea, which is now Baiju Town in Dafeng City. In September of the 27th year of the Zhizheng era (1367 AD), Zhu Yuanzhang sent his military advisor Liu Bowen to invite Shi Nai’an to serve in his government for the second time. Shi declined the offer, citing his old age and illness, and instead focused on writing, completing the renowned classic ‘Water Margin’.
The Shi family’s ancestral hall, initially converted from Shi Nai’an’s former residence by his descendants, Shi Wencan and others, features a three-part hall with eaves and arches, exuding an air of ancient elegance and grandeur. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the Japanese invading forces in 1938 and was restored in 1981. The interior displays important materials such as ‘Water Margin’ research and the Shi Nai’an family tree. The hall is open to the public from January 1st to December 31st, from 09:00 to 17:00.
