With a history of over 600 years, Shi Pu Ancient City is uniquely nestled between the mountains and the sea, showcasing the charm of a mountainous fishing port. The city retains many quaint old houses, small shops selling seafood by the roadside, and 14 exhibition halls where you can learn about the local culture. Whether you love ancient cities, culture, or seafood, this place is an excellent choice.
The ancient city is not very large, stretching about 1.5 kilometers deep, and can be explored on foot along the stone-paved roads. Unlike the finely carved Jiangnan ancient cities, most of the buildings here are simple wooden structures. Along the way, you will find antique houses adorned with many colorful fish lanterns, and small decorations made from shells and green plants on the windows of every household, adding a unique charm. What’s more, the city is still inhabited by many residents, giving it a vibrant life and a distinctive atmosphere in photos. Entry into the ancient city requires a ticket. The tour starts from the Shi Pu Ancient City archway, and you can visit the main attractions along the main road. Next to the archway, there is a Jiangxin Temple, which is always bustling with incense. At the entrance, you can explore two exhibition halls, ‘The Vicissitudes of the Port City’ and ‘Farming the Sea and Herding Fishermen’, to understand the history of the ancient city and the life of the fishing village through displays and artifacts. Further along, on Fujian Street, is the Jinshan Hotel, which still preserves the layout from when the crew of ‘The Fisherman’s Song’ stayed here. Not far beyond, passing through the Wengcheng, you arrive at Zhong Street, the main commercial street of the ancient city with a strong fishery merchant atmosphere. Uniquely, there is a moon gate-style fire wall every 50 meters along the street, which used to prevent fires and thieves, and now adds a sense of depth and extension to the street. In the past, this street was lined with shops, and now you can visit exhibition halls along the street, such as Hongzhang Silk Store, Chinese Button Exhibition Hall, Yuansheng Money House, Hundred Boats Pavilion, Da Jie Chun, Zai Xing Tobacco House, Qian Da Pawnshop, and more, to gain a comprehensive understanding of local life. When you visit Shi Pu Ancient Fishing Port City, foodies must not miss the seafood, which is slightly expensive but fresh. Girls can buy small potted plants made from sea snail shells, which are very cute. Next to the ancient city is the harbor, where you can see many boats docked during the fishing ban period, adding to the scenery of the ancient city. There is a Taiwan-style snack street next to Jiangxin Temple, which can solve your dining needs.
