Shi Zhong Mountain is located in Jiujiang’s Hukou County, by the side of Poyang Lake. Many tourists learn about this place from Su Shi’s ‘Record of Shi Zhong Mountain’ in their middle school textbooks. However, when you see it in person, you might be somewhat disappointed as it is only over 40 meters high and more resembles a small park. Since the mountain is not tall, climbing it is not tiring at all. The landscape layout on the mountain is compact, with a view at almost every step.
Most of the scenery in the mountain is related to Su Shi, stones, and bells. For example, there is the statue of Su Shi at the entrance of the scenic area, the Shi Zhong Pavilion on the way up the mountain, and a ‘Harmonious Bell’ that costs one yuan to ring for tourists to ‘knock on fortune’ and pray. Walking all the way to the Jiang Tian Yi Lan Pavilion is a great place to view the scenery on the mountain. Standing in the pavilion and looking out, Poyang Lake is nearby and the Yangtze River is in the distance. On a clear day, you can see a clear boundary where the lake water and river water meet, truly a scene of water and sky as one.
Continuing forward, there are many more sights to see. The Zhonglie Temple and the adjacent Cichen Forest, as well as a lakeside tower, are the main buildings on Shi Zhong Mountain. Although they have been reconstructed later, they still have some ancient charm. Sometimes there are chime performances on the stage here, which you can stop to appreciate. On the way down the mountain, there are several cliff inscriptions. There is a winding path made of stone slabs over the water in front of the inscriptions, only allowing one person to pass at a time.
